What does 1 Samuel 28:11 mean?

King Saul has come to a medium in disguise, desperate and afraid before a battle he senses he'll lose. He asks her to call up someone from the dead, and he requests Samuel, the prophet who anointed him as king years earlier and whose guidance he's deeply missed since their relationship fractured. What makes this moment so raw is that Saul is willing to break his own laws (he'd outlawed mediums) and venture into forbidden spiritual territory just to hear from someone he trusts. It's the act of someone completely unmoored, grasping for answers and comfort anywhere he can find them. The request shows how much Samuel meant to him and how isolated Saul has become, cut off from God's direction and now turning to the darkest available alternatives.
