What does 1 Samuel 27:4 mean?

When David fled to the Philistine city of Gath for safety, Saul eventually heard about it and stopped hunting him. This might seem strange, since Gath was enemy territory, but from Saul's perspective, David was now someone else's problem, beyond his reach and control. Sometimes when we're consumed by pursuing something, we let it go the moment we believe it's no longer within our grasp, even if we haven't actually resolved the underlying conflict. The verse captures that moment of relief mixed with resignation, showing how Saul's obsessive chase finally loosened its grip, at least for a time.
