“So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.”
What does 1 Samuel 26:7 mean?
David has been running for his life, hunted by King Saul who views him as a rival threat. In this moment, David sneaks into Saul's camp at night with his nephew Abishai, and they find Saul completely vulnerable, sleeping with his spear planted upright beside him. Everyone else, including Saul's general Abner, is asleep around him. This scene sets up a crucial test of character.
