What does 1 Samuel 26:22 mean?

David is speaking to King Saul after a tense night in which David had the chance to kill his pursuer but chose not to. Instead of taking revenge, David took Saul's spear as proof of how close he'd gotten, then called out to him from a distance. Now David is offering to return it, using the spear as evidence of his restraint and his refusal to harm the king, even when he had every reason and opportunity to do so. It's David's way of saying, "Look, I could have ended this, but I didn't, because I respect you." The gesture speaks louder than words about David's character and his trust that God will work things out rather than David taking matters into his own hands.
