What does 1 Samuel 25:23 mean?
Abigail recognized that David was a man of power and authority, so she showed him profound respect in the way people of her culture did. By dismounting quickly, bowing low, and prostrating herself, she was communicating humility and submission, which was the appropriate response when someone of lower status approached someone of higher rank. This dramatic gesture wasn't just etiquette, though. Abigail was also trying to de-escalate a dangerous situation: David was on his way to her household with soldiers, angry at her foolish husband. Sometimes meeting someone's anger with genuine humility and respect can change the entire course of events.
