What does 1 Samuel 24:22 mean?

After sparing Saul's life in the cave (even when he had the perfect chance for revenge), David made a solemn promise to the king. Saul, moved by David's mercy and restraint, turned back toward his palace satisfied. Meanwhile, David and his followers headed to their fortress in the wilderness, returning to the hard reality of being hunted men. This small verse captures something profound: David chose the difficult path of integrity over an easy path to power, and then had to live with the consequences of that choice. Sometimes doing what's right doesn't solve our problems immediately, but it keeps our conscience clear.
