What does 1 Samuel 24:13 mean?
David is quoting an old saying to explain his own restraint. He's saying that evil naturally produces more evil, like a cycle that feeds itself, yet he's choosing to break that cycle by refusing to harm King Saul even though Saul is hunting him. In that moment, David had a chance to kill his enemy and take the throne for himself, but he stepped back instead. He's telling Saul that just because someone has done wrong doesn't mean everyone around them must respond with more wrong. There's real courage in recognizing that old pattern and deciding not to follow it.
