“Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.””
What does 1 Samuel 23:7 mean?
Saul hears that David is in the walled city of Keilah and immediately assumes victory is his. He believes God has finally handed David over to him because David is now trapped within city walls and gates, something Saul thinks he can use to his advantage. But Saul's confidence reveals how easily we can mistake circumstance for certainty, or assume God is working the way we expect Him to. What makes this moment poignant is that Saul isn't entirely wrong about the facts, yet he's missing the deeper truth. David genuinely is in a confined place, but God's protection isn't limited by gates and bars. Sometimes when we feel cornered or trapped, it can feel like our situation is exactly what our enemies wanted, yet it's often precisely in those tight spaces that God works in ways we couldn't have planned.
