“Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Yahweh; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.”
What does 1 Samuel 21:7 mean?
David has just fled King Saul in fear for his life and asked a priest for food and a weapon. This verse quietly introduces someone watching from the shadows: Doeg, one of Saul's most trusted officials, who happens to be present at the shrine that day. Though we don't know why Doeg was there, his presence sets up the tragedy that follows, because he will later report David's whereabouts to Saul. There's something deeply human about this moment. Doeg isn't presented as evil here, just as someone in the wrong place at the wrong time, and his loyalties will cost innocent people their lives.
