What does 1 Samuel 20:2 mean?
David's friend Jonathan is reassuring him after David has grown fearful that King Saul (Jonathan's father) wants to kill him. Jonathan is saying that his father tells him everything important, so if Saul were actually planning David's death, Jonathan would know about it—and he doesn't. Jonathan genuinely believes there's been some misunderstanding and that David is safe. What's touching here is that Jonathan is trying to calm his friend's very real terror with logic: he's saying "my father confides in me completely, so trust me when I tell you this threat isn't real." Of course, Jonathan is about to discover he was wrong in a painful way. But in this moment, he's doing what a loyal friend does—offering what reassurance he can based on what he knows, even as doubt is about to shake his certainty.
