What does 1 Samuel 20:16 mean?

Jonathan was David's closest friend, and here he's making a binding promise that goes beyond the two of them, extending to David's entire family. When Jonathan says "Yahweh will require it at the hand of David's enemies," he's calling on God to hold him accountable, swearing that he and his descendants will remain loyal to David and his line no matter what comes. It's a solemn oath that shows the depth of their friendship and Jonathan's willingness to stake his family's future on his devotion to David. This covenant becomes especially poignant because Jonathan knows his father King Saul is hunting David, yet Jonathan chooses loyalty to his friend over allegiance to his own father's wishes.
