What does 1 Samuel 20:14 mean?

David is asking Jonathan for something deeper than just friendship in the moment. He's asking Jonathan to treat him with the kind of faithful love that reflects God's own character, the sort of love that stays committed even when circumstances change. The "while yet I live" phrase shows David's awareness of how fragile his position is, caught between his growing fame (which threatens King Saul) and uncertain survival. He's essentially saying: show me loyalty rooted in something stronger than self-interest, loyalty that mirrors how God loves us, and don't abandon me when it would be easier to do so. It's a vulnerable request from someone facing real danger, asking for the kind of love that holds steady when the stakes are high.
