What does 1 Samuel 2:31 mean?
God is speaking here through the prophet Samuel to Eli, the priest who failed to discipline his own sons when they were abusing their position in the temple. The "cutting off of the arm" is a metaphor for removing strength and power, and this prophecy means Eli's family line will be stripped of their priestly authority and influence. God is saying that Eli's household won't have the blessing of growing old in their position of honor, because they used their power carelessly and didn't correct serious wrongs. This is a sobering reminder that leadership carries responsibility.
