1 Samuel 2:12
“Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn’t know Yahweh.”
What does 1 Samuel 2:12 mean?
Eli was a priest and judge of Israel, but his two sons who served as priests alongside him were corrupt and irreverent. The description that "they didn't know Yahweh" doesn't mean they were ignorant of God's existence, but rather that they didn't honor or respect Him, living instead by their own desires and abusing their sacred position for personal gain. This verse introduces a painful reality many families face: that growing up around faith doesn't guarantee it takes root in a person's heart. Their spiritual failure had real consequences, both for themselves and for the people they were meant to serve faithfully. It's a sobering reminder that each person must choose their own relationship with God.
