Saul is desperately asking Samuel for forgiveness after disobeying God's direct command about destroying the Amalekites. He's not just asking to be let off the hook, but asking Samuel to turn back around and accompany him so he can restore his worship and standing before God. There's a real sense of panic here, as if Saul is trying to repair something he knows is broken. What makes this moment both human and sad is that Saul seems more concerned with how things look publicly (wanting Samuel there as a witness) than with genuine repentance, and Samuel won't turn back. When we've damaged our relationship with God, going through the right motions or wanting to appear faithful isn't the same as true change of heart, and sometimes the consequences of our choices can't simply be erased by saying sorry.
