1 Samuel 14:9
“If they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them.”
What does 1 Samuel 14:9 mean?
Jonathan and his young armor-bearer are vastly outnumbered by the Philistine garrison, so they're looking for a sign from God about whether to attack. This verse captures their test: if the enemy soldiers invite them to come closer, they'll take it as a divine "no" and stay put. If instead the Philistines tell them to come down, that will be the green light. It's a remarkable moment of faith dressed in tactical language. Rather than charging ahead with human logic (two men against many is suicide), Jonathan creates a way to let God's answer be unmistakable. Sometimes when we're facing something that feels impossible or unclear, waiting for genuine confirmation, rather than assuming we already know what to do, can be its own kind of courage.
