““But they forgot Yahweh their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.”
What does 1 Samuel 12:9 mean?
Samuel is reminding the people of Israel about a hard pattern in their history: whenever they turned away from God and stopped trusting him, they ended up conquered and oppressed by their enemies. Sisera, the Philistines, and the king of Moab were all real threats that had dominated Israel at different times when the nation had drifted from following God. He's not saying God punished them arbitrarily, but rather that abandoning their relationship with God left them vulnerable and without the guidance and strength they needed.
