1 Samuel 12:21
“Don’t turn away to go after vain things which can’t profit or deliver, for they are vain.”
What does 1 Samuel 12:21 mean?
Samuel is warning Israel not to chase after worthless things, even though they've just gotten what they thought they wanted (a king). He's speaking from experience, having watched people abandon what actually sustains them for things that only look promising from a distance. The point isn't complicated: when we pursue things that can't genuinely help us, we're wasting the one life we have. Whether it's status, possessions, or empty promises, some things simply don't deliver what they advertise. Samuel's urging his people to notice the difference between what seems urgent and what's actually solid, especially now when they're tempted to put their faith in a human ruler instead of God. If you're in a season of hard choices or feeling pulled in different directions, this verse is a gentle reality check: spend your energy on what lasts and what actually nourishes you.
