What does 1 Peter 4:9 mean?
Peter is calling us to welcome each other into our homes and lives, but he's adding something crucial: do it gladly, not with a grudging heart. It's easy to open our doors while silently resenting the inconvenience or extra work, but that defeats the whole purpose of hospitality. When we grumble, we make people feel like burdens rather than blessings. Peter understands this comes down to attitude, not just action. True hospitality flows from a generous spirit, and when we're going through hard times ourselves, this can feel impossibly difficult. But that's exactly when God invites us to trust that opening our arms to others actually opens our hearts too.
