What does 1 Peter 3:9 mean?
When someone hurts us, our first instinct is often to hurt them back, or at least to match their rudeness with our own sharp words. Peter breaks that cycle by saying: when wronged, choose to bless instead. This doesn't mean pretending the hurt didn't happen or being a doormat, but rather refusing to let bitterness drive your response. What makes this possible isn't willpower alone, but remembering that you've been called to something bigger. Peter is saying your very purpose as a follower of Jesus is to break the revenge cycle. When you bless those who curse you, you're not losing something, you're actually stepping into the inheritance of blessing that belongs to you. It's a paradox: the way to receive blessing is to stop hoarding your goodness and start giving it away, even to those who don't deserve it.
