What does 1 Peter 2:13 mean?
Peter is encouraging early Christians to respect earthly authorities and laws, not because those rulers deserve it, but because submitting to legitimate order reflects obedience to God himself. This was radical advice for persecuted believers who had every reason to resent their pagan government, yet Peter saw honoring authorities as a witness to their faith rather than a betrayal of it. The phrase "for the Lord's sake" is the key: you're ultimately answering to God, not just following human rules. This doesn't mean blind obedience to evil commands, but rather a posture of respect toward the systems God allows to exist, done quietly and without bitterness.
