What does 1 Peter 2:10 mean?
Peter is speaking to early Christians who came from pagan backgrounds, reminding them of their radical transformation. Before they knew Christ, they felt like outsiders to God's family, disconnected from his covenant and care, but through Jesus they've been brought into belonging. The "mercy" here isn't just forgiveness of sins, though that's part of it; it's God's active compassion that chooses them, welcomes them, and makes them part of his people.
