“(now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and cypress trees, and with gold, according to all his desire), King Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.”
What does 1 Kings 9:11 mean?
Solomon had borrowed heavily from Hiram, the king of Tyre, to build the temple and his palace, receiving valuable cedar wood and gold. When he couldn't fully repay the debt in currency, he did something surprising: he handed over twenty entire cities to settle what he owed. This arrangement shows how interconnected ancient kingdoms were through trade and obligation, but it also reveals the enormous cost of Solomon's grand building projects. Later in history, Hiram apparently wasn't satisfied with these cities, which tells us something about the weight of this debt and the strain it put on Solomon's resources and territory.
