What does 1 Kings 6:24 mean?
Solomon's temple included two massive wooden cherubs (angelic figures) that stood in the inner sanctuary, their wings stretched out to protect the ark of the covenant. Each wing measured five cubits (roughly seven and a half feet), making each cherub's full wingspan about fifteen feet across, with their outstretched wings meeting in the center of the room. This detail might seem like a minor architectural note, but it painted a picture of something awe-inspiring and protective. Those enormous gilded wings represented God's covering presence over his people, much like the imagery used elsewhere in Scripture. For ancient Israelites approaching this holy space, the scale would have been intentional, creating a sense of being held and sheltered by something far greater than themselves.
