What does 1 Kings 3:2 mean?
In Solomon's early reign, the main temple hadn't been built yet, so worship happened at various hilltop altars scattered throughout the land. This verse is simply explaining why people were still using these local high places instead of gathering at one central sanctuary. It's not condemning them for it, just noting the practical reality: when there's no official temple, people worship where they can. Once Solomon completed the great temple in Jerusalem, these local altars eventually fell out of favor, but during this transition period, they were a normal part of how people connected with God.
