What does 1 Kings 21:1 mean?

Naboth owns something modest but valuable to him: a vineyard inherited from his family, situated right next to where King Ahab lives. This proximity is about to matter very much. The verse sets up a collision between a working man's legitimate ownership and a powerful king's unchecked desires, showing us how vulnerability increases when you have little power and live near those who have much. What follows in this chapter becomes a troubling study of how authority without conscience can destroy the innocent.
