What does 1 Kings 20:8 mean?
When the king of Israel asks his advisors whether to accept harsh demands from an invading enemy, the elders and people speak with one voice: reject this completely. They're not saying "negotiate carefully" or "buy time"—they're saying stand firm, don't give an inch. In moments of real pressure, when someone in power is tempted to cave to threats, sometimes the hardest and most important thing a community can do is remind that person of their own backbone. These ordinary people around the king recognized that surrendering to intimidation would only invite worse demands later, and they were willing to say so even when fear might have tempted silence.
