What does 1 Kings 2:40 mean?
Shimei was under house arrest by King Solomon's orders, confined to Jerusalem with strict instructions not to leave. When his servants ran away to the nearby city of Gath, Shimei made a calculated choice to leave the city anyway, saddling his donkey to go retrieve them. In doing so, he broke his oath to the king, crossing the very boundary he'd been forbidden to cross. This moment reveals how easily we can rationalize breaking our commitments when circumstances feel urgent or justified. Shimei thought retrieving his property was a reasonable exception, but Solomon saw it as a direct violation of their agreement.
