What does 1 Kings 18:17 mean?
When King Ahab finally comes face to face with the prophet Elijah, his first words are an accusation: Elijah is the "troubler of Israel." What makes this moment striking is that Ahab has it backwards. For years, a severe drought has devastated the land because the king turned the nation toward worshiping false gods instead of the God of Israel. Elijah actually comes to call the people back to faithfulness, which would restore their prosperity, yet Ahab sees him as the source of trouble. This confrontation reminds us how easy it is to blame the messenger when we don't want to hear the message. Ahab was comfortable with his choices and didn't want to face what they had cost his people.
