“It will happen, as soon as I leave you, that Yahweh’s Spirit will carry you I don’t know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Yahweh from my youth.”
What does 1 Kings 18:12 mean?
Obadiah is speaking to the prophet Elijah, and he's expressing a very human fear mixed with genuine faith. He's saying: "If I tell King Ahab where you are and then you disappear because God's Spirit moves you away, the king will blame me and have me killed for losing you." It's the honest worry of someone caught between a dangerous ruler and God's unpredictable work. What makes this moment tender is that Obadiah admits his fear, yet in the same breath he reminds both Elijah and himself that he has worshiped God faithfully his whole life. He's not claiming to be fearless or perfect, just faithful. Sometimes the deepest faith lives right alongside our very real concerns about what will happen to us, and that's okay. God sees both our trembling and our trust.
