“Nevertheless for David’s sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem;”
What does 1 Kings 15:4 mean?
Even though Abijam, the king in question here, had strayed from faithfulness, God remained loyal to the promise he'd made to David generations earlier. The "lamp" is a beautiful image for a continuing line, a dynasty that wouldn't be snuffed out, and a city that would endure. God's commitment to David's family line held firm not because Abijam deserved it, but because of God's own faithfulness to his earlier covenant. There's real comfort in this for anyone who's experienced being upheld by grace we haven't earned, or seen God remain faithful to his promises even when we or those around us have fallen short.
