What does 1 Kings 12:15 mean?
When King Rehoboam refused to lighten the tax burden his father Solomon had placed on Israel, he wasn't making a random choice, but fulfilling something God had already set in motion. Years earlier, a prophet named Ahijah had told Jeroboam that God would tear the kingdom apart and give him ten tribes to rule. Rehoboam's stubborn decision to ignore his people's pleas was the very mechanism through which God's earlier word came true, splitting Israel into two rival kingdoms. Sometimes what looks like human stubbornness or poor judgment is actually God working out purposes that were announced long before, which can be both comforting and sobering depending on where we find ourselves in the story.
