I will afflict the offspring of David for this, but not forever.’”

What does 1 Kings 11:39 mean?

God is speaking through the prophet Ahijah about consequences that will come to David's descendants because of King Solomon's unfaithfulness. The promise here, though, carries real mercy: the punishment won't be permanent or complete destruction. It's the kind of thing a parent might say—there will be real consequences, but the relationship and hope aren't being severed forever. This matters especially for people carrying shame or feeling like they've messed up too badly to come back. God's discipline in Scripture is never presented as the final word for those who are his. There's always a threshold beyond which his anger doesn't go, and always the possibility of restoration.
