What does 1 Kings 1:53 mean?

Adonijah had tried to seize the throne after his father King David died, but Solomon was chosen as the rightful king instead. In desperation, Adonijah fled to the altar seeking sanctuary, a practice that offered temporary protection to those facing death. When Solomon heard this, he showed mercy instead of executing his rival brother on the spot. That simple act of sparing Adonijah's life and sending him home was Solomon displaying the wisdom and restraint that would define his early reign, choosing clemency over vengeance even when he had every legal right to act otherwise.
