“As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.””
What does 1 Kings 1:37 mean?
The priest Benaiah speaks these words as King David's son Solomon is being anointed to succeed his father. He's blessing Solomon by asking God to give him the same faithful presence and guidance that has sustained David throughout his reign, and even to establish Solomon's kingdom as even more powerful and secure than David's own. There's real warmth in this blessing, because Benaiah isn't diminishing David's legacy but rather honoring it by hoping Solomon will build on it. When he asks that God "be with" Solomon just as he was with David, he's essentially asking for continuity of God's protection, wisdom, and favor across the generations. It's the kind of thing we might say when passing something important to someone we care about: may you have what I've had, and may it carry you even further.
