“He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.”
What does 1 Kings 1:19 mean?
This verse captures a pivotal moment when Adonijah, one of King David's sons, is throwing a lavish celebration to position himself as the next king, but he's deliberately excluded Solomon. The speaker (Nathan the prophet) is pointing out to Bathsheba that Adonijah's guest list reveals his true intentions: he's invited the important military and religious figures, but noticeably left out Solomon, David's chosen heir. The abundance of the feast shows Adonijah's confidence and resources, but that very exclusion is the problem. Nathan is essentially saying, "Do you see what's happening here? He's making his move, and Solomon isn't even invited." It's a wake-up call that spurs Bathsheba and Nathan to act quickly to ensure David affirms Solomon as king before it's too late. Sometimes what people leave out speaks as loudly as what they include.
