What does 1 John 5:19 mean?
This verse captures something many people feel deeply, especially during difficult times: that darkness and harm seem to have real power in our world. John isn't denying that evil exists or that it influences the systems and choices around us. But he's making a crucial distinction by saying "we are of God"—meaning those who belong to God's family stand in a different reality altogether, even while living in a world under the sway of evil. The reassurance here is subtly powerful: you're not part of that dominion if you've turned toward God. You're under different ownership and protection, connected to a power that ultimately transcends the evil one's reach. This doesn't mean life becomes easy or that you won't face real struggles, but it means you're not abandoned to the world's darkness. John wrote this to early Christians facing real persecution and confusion, reminding them that their allegiance to God placed them in God's hands, not the enemy's, regardless of what circumstances might suggest.
