1 John 2:1
“My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.”
What does 1 John 2:1 mean?
John is writing to young believers in his community, and he's being tender with them, calling them "little children." He wants them to aim for a life without sin, not because God is waiting to punish them, but because living rightly brings freedom and peace. At the same time, John is being wonderfully realistic: he knows that followers of Jesus still stumble and fall short. That's why the second part is such good news. If you do sin, you're not abandoned or beyond help. Jesus himself stands as your advocate before God, which means he's on your side, interceding for you. The word "Counselor" carries the sense of someone who comes alongside you, represents you, and speaks on your behalf. Because Jesus is righteous (perfectly aligned with God), he has the authority to do this. You have access to restoration and forgiveness whenever you need it.
