“Or have only Barnabas and I no right to not work?”
What does 1 Corinthians 9:6 mean?
Paul is defending his right to be supported financially by the churches he serves, and he's using himself and Barnabas as examples. Both of them have chosen to work secular jobs to support themselves rather than rely on church donations, even though apostles technically have the authority to receive that support. His question isn't really asking for an answer, it's more like saying, "Look, Barnabas and I have proven we can do this work without burdening you financially, so nobody should doubt our commitment or our authority." It's a humble but firm way of saying that choosing to work hard and not demand payment doesn't make someone less legitimate or less worthy of respect.
