“For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward. But if not of my own will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me.”
What does 1 Corinthians 9:17 mean?
Paul is wrestling with something many of us face: the difference between doing good things because we genuinely want to, versus doing them because we feel obligated or called. He's saying that when we serve willingly and wholeheartedly, there's joy and reward in it. But even when we're reluctant or feel pushed into something we didn't choose, God has still given us a sacred responsibility to handle faithfully. The beautiful tension here is that both situations matter. You're not less faithful for feeling reluctant, and your service isn't worthless just because nobody forced you. Whether you're running toward something or stepping faithfully into something hard, God sees it as work worth doing. It's encouraging for anyone who's ever felt stuck in a role they didn't ask for, or anyone wrestling with whether their reluctant obedience even counts.
