1 Corinthians 7:22

For he who was called in the Lord being a bondservant is the Lord’s free man. Likewise he who was called being free is Christ’s bondservant.

What does 1 Corinthians 7:22 mean?

Paul is reminding the Corinthians that slavery and freedom in the social sense matter far less than spiritual reality. Someone enslaved by society's standards is actually spiritually free in Christ, while someone born free in the world has genuinely become a servant of Jesus. It's a radical reframing: your legal status doesn't determine your true identity or worth, and following Christ is the freedom that actually counts. This would have been powerful comfort to enslaved Christians in Corinth who couldn't change their earthly circumstances, and a challenging call to free Christians not to trust their status as their ultimate security.
