What does 1 Corinthians 7:20 mean?
Paul is writing to people who'd just become Christians, and some were getting restless about their circumstances—their jobs, their social status, whether they should change everything. He's encouraging them to stay put rather than assume they need to overhaul their lives the moment they believe. The point isn't that you're trapped forever or that pursuing growth is wrong. It's that there's often quiet dignity and faithfulness in staying where you are while you figure things out spiritually. If you're a tentmaker, keep making tents. If you're enslaved (as many in Corinth were), that situation is still wrong, but God meets you there. Sometimes the most profound transformation happens not when we rearrange our external circumstances, but when we let Christ transform us from the inside out, right where we stand. This can be genuinely freeing if you're feeling pressure to have everything figured out or to make dramatic changes before you're ready.
