1 Corinthians 4:15

For though you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, you don’t have many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, I became your father through the Good News.

What does 1 Corinthians 4:15 mean?

Paul is drawing a distinction between people who teach information and those who deeply invest in shaping lives. He's saying that while the Corinthian church has plenty of instructors, what they really need are mentors who care about their spiritual growth as whole people, not just their knowledge. Paul claims this deeper role for himself because he brought them into faith through sharing the gospel with them, so he sees a father's responsibility toward them. The warmth here comes from Paul's tenderness about relationships: knowing facts about Jesus isn't the same as being guided toward becoming more like Jesus by someone who genuinely loves you.
