1 Corinthians 14:6
“But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?”
What does 1 Corinthians 14:6 mean?
Paul is making a practical point about what actually helps a community grow spiritually. He's saying that if he shows up speaking in languages nobody understands, he's not doing anyone any good, no matter how authentic or powerful the experience might be for him personally. Real spiritual value comes when someone communicates something that edifies others: fresh insight from God, deep understanding of truth, words that challenge and redirect people, or clear instruction about faith and life. This speaks to something we all recognize on some level. A gift or ability only matters if it connects with people and helps them somehow. Paul isn't dismissing speaking in tongues as invalid, but he's challenging the Corinthian church to think about their priorities. Are you using your gifts to build yourself up in a private spiritual experience, or are you genuinely trying to strengthen the whole community? The answer should shape how you exercise what God has given you.
