“Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?”
What does 1 Corinthians 14:16 mean?
Paul is addressing a practical problem in the early church: when someone prays or blesses in a language (or spiritual utterance) that others don't understand, the people listening can't participate meaningfully by saying "Amen," which was how believers affirmed and joined together in prayer. He's pointing out that it's hard to agree with something you don't comprehend. The person in the ordinary pew, so to speak, is left out rather than built up. Paul cares deeply that worship bring people together rather than create confusion, so he's gently pushing the church toward clarity and inclusion in their gatherings. This doesn't mean rejecting spiritual experiences, but rather choosing what serves the whole community's faith and connection.
