1 Corinthians 10:21
“You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.”
What does 1 Corinthians 10:21 mean?
Paul is warning the Corinthian church about divided loyalty, using the powerful image of sharing a meal. In that culture (and in ours), eating and drinking together meant fellowship and commitment to the same values. He's saying you can't genuinely commit yourself to following Jesus while also participating in things that pull you away from him, whether that's literal idol worship or the attitudes and behaviors those idols represented. This isn't about perfection or never stumbling. It's about where your core allegiance lies. Paul recognizes that our choices about what we participate in shape who we become and what we're connected to. If you're serious about belonging to Jesus, you can't simultaneously give your heart and habits to things that contradict his way. The good news underneath this warning is that choosing the Lord's table, choosing his fellowship, is always the better option.
