What does 1 Corinthians 10:18 mean?

Paul is asking his readers to look at how things worked in ancient Jewish practice, where eating meat from a sacrifice meant you were joining in that act of worship at the altar. He's building an argument about how what we eat and where we worship matter spiritually, not just physically. When you consumed part of a sacrifice, you weren't just getting food, you were entering into covenant relationship with God and community with others doing the same thing. By drawing this parallel, Paul wants the Corinthians to understand that their own eating practices have spiritual weight and consequences, especially when it comes to things offered to idols.
