What does 1 Corinthians 1:20 mean?
Paul is asking a pointed question that cuts to the heart of human pride. He's essentially saying, "Look around at all the brilliant people—the philosophers, the educated elite, the legal experts—and ask yourself: where has their wisdom actually gotten us?" His point isn't that knowledge is bad, but that the world's smartest thinking often misses what matters most. God's wisdom, Paul is suggesting, operates on completely different terms. The cross of Jesus—which the world saw as shameful failure—is actually where God's deepest wisdom was revealed. This doesn't mean Christians should be anti-intellectual, but it does mean that credentials and clever arguments don't automatically bring us closer to truth or to God. Sometimes the most important truths are grasped by faith rather than by having the right degree or the winning argument.
