“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.”
What does 1 Chronicles 29:14 mean?
King David is speaking here at a moment when his people have just given generously toward building the temple. Rather than taking pride in their contribution, he recognizes something profound: everything they offered actually came from God in the first place. He's saying that their ability to give, the resources they had to give, and even their willing hearts to give all originated with God. This teaches us something liberating about generosity. When we give to God or serve others, we're not impoverishing ourselves or making some grand sacrifice from our own limited supply. We're simply returning what was already his, offered with gratitude. It's a reminder that removes both the pride of giving and the fear of not having enough, because ultimately we're working with what God has entrusted to us temporarily.
