But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.

What does 1 Chronicles 24:2 mean?

Nadab and Abihu were Aaron's oldest sons, chosen to serve as priests alongside their father. But they died young, leaving no one to carry on their family line of priestly service. This meant their younger brothers Eleazar and Ithamar stepped into the role instead, becoming the ones responsible for the sacred duties in Israel's worship. There's something quietly sobering in this verse. It reminds us that life doesn't always follow the expected path, and plans can shift in ways we don't anticipate. Yet even in loss and change, God's work continues through those who remain. Eleazar and Ithamar didn't choose to be next in line, but they answered the call that came to them, showing how faithfulness can emerge even in the midst of grief and disruption.
